Interview with Cathy Leung, Dartslive Official Player (Part 1)

Recently, I had the privilege to spend some one-on-one time with the prettiest Dartslive Official Player, Cathy Leung, who flew down from Hong Kong to attend the Dartslive Singapore's League Season 7 Fiesta. She had attracted quite a lot of attention during her two days here in Singapore, spending some time doing darts promotion with the local darters as well as taking pictures and signing autographs for the enthusiastic and star-struck players.

OK, to settle the first basic question you are probably having on your mind, the answer is Yes, she is indeed a pretty lady with a humble down-to-earth personality. In case you don't already know, she is an entertainment artiste in Hong Kong who have won singing awards, made her first commercial music album, "Under the Sun" in 2007 and went on to do show hostings, stage performances, etc. As such, she is very media savvy, dealing with the infamous Hong Kong “entertainment news” reporters and is open to answering any questions that I can think of, in detail! But alas, I am not going into personal questions about the types of boyfriends she likes. And oh, the answer to other question you probably have is, Yes, she is still single!

Back to darts... Cathy's first started playing darts not at a bar or even a dojo (as is typical in Hong Kong), but at a church just about 2 years ago. Well, not really the holy chapel in a church, but rather, a youth civic center that belongs to a church. At the center, there were 4 dart boards that were under-utilised. "One day, a thought suddenly strike me. Since this place has dart boards and no one seems to be playing it or even know how to play, maybe I should give it a try", said Cathy when she first felt the urge to try darts.

Cathy Leung at Singapore's Super Knockout Tournament, 2014
"In the beginning, I don't know even how to throw darts that sticks on the board but I wanted to get my own darts. So, I went to one of Hong Kong darts dojo, Pro Darts, to buy my own set of darts. On the boards there, I remember seeing the game "Out on a Lim", where you see the animation of Paul Lim falling out of a tree. I had this silly dream where I would get to know Paul Lim and he would teach me how to play properly. And my dream did come true as I got to know Paul Lim one year later and he taught me a lot,” said Cathy delightfully. "I felt very blessed. I knew I receive a lot of care, blessings and good fortunes from many people in the darts industry within this short time.”

Cathy, who was also active in church activities, found a new inspiration to motivate herself on darts. "Initially, when i first started playing darts, the game itself was interesting. But the real motivation to improve came when I realised there was this feature on the Dartslive 2 board where you can flash your own custom message whenever an award, such as low ton or hat trick, was hit. At that time, I love to read the Bible a lot and I started putting bible verses as my custom messages. So, in order to get the verses to show up on the screen, I was very motivated to train and improve myself to get at least a low ton on every round!"

Cathy's determination to improve soon caught the eye of the owner of Pro Darts shop in Hong Kong. She explained, "One day, I went up to Pro Darts to buy some cute accessories to decorate my darts pouch. I met the Pro Darts boss and we talked and he offered me a sponsorship! I thought I needed the accessories anyway and he was willing to support me, so I agreed to sign on. He then introduced me to Paul Lim who then led me to Dartslive. Paul felt I have potential as a good female darter and gave me a a good start in the darts industry. I am also an artiste, working in the Hong Kong's entertainment industry on movie productions, CD productions, show hostings, so they felt I would be suitable to assist them in the promotion of Dartslive soft tip darts especially as a female darter and invited me to be their Official Player. I knew I was lucky to be signed up as an Official Player although I did not win many darts tournaments or awards or trophies.  Later on, I was signed up as a Target sponsored player and you know what, my first darts set was actually from Target too! I feel I am blessed and lucky to meet many people who helped open the right doors and gave me a lot of opportunities in this industry. Isn't it funny?"

Cathy Leung, at Dartslive Singapore's Super League Season 7 Fiesta

Cathy's darts mentor is Paul Lim. "Over the past 30 years, he has always been a top player, a champion. To me, I feel he is the best player. He taught me a lot more than just playing the game. He taught me how to analyse the psychological side of the game, the competitive spirit. At the elementary level, it is your technique, your stroke, your release that is important but when you go up to the master level, it is no longer the technical ability that matters any more but your attitude, your confidence, your spirit, your ability to thrive under pressure that becomes very important. That is what Paul's champion mentality is all about. That's the difference between a good player and a top player."

Cathy shares a tip on how to improve your darts, and it doesn't entail training for 100 hours! Read on in Part 2 of the interview

Super League Season 7 Fiesta

What a Fiesta party it was! Yes, the Super League Season 7 Fiesta party touched down like a whirlwind and swept us around and finally left and I finally had time to properly rest and sit down to write about it now. Sorry for the delay :)

The biggest, most fun, most challenging, most exciting darts fiesta party took place last Sunday, 6th July, 2014 at the Furama City Center Hotel ballroom. Well, it was the best darters party of the year as it was announced that the Fiesta will not be a twice-a-year party any more . Yes, unfortunately due to a variety of reasons, the Fiesta party will be changed to an annual party starting from this year. Therefore we had to party harder this time around to last for a whole year !

Right from the start, the Fiesta promised to be a popular event as all 450 paid tickets were snapped up within a few days of it being released. Due to space constraint of the hall at Furama City Centre Hotel, no new tickets could be issued. That would probably mean we can look forward to a bigger venue next year to house more darters! More people usually means a bigger, better show because the cheers would be louder too!

As the halls were also used before the Fiesta for the Super League Season 7 SKO Tournament, there was very little time to dress up and turnaround the hall. But the team managed to pull it off very well. The seating were re-arranged, a disco sound system and laser lights were installed and hall lights dimmed down and suddenly, the hall was transformed!

Before the start of the event proper, there were various game booths players can visit to try their hand to win some freebies. As soon as the main doors were open, players streamed in to "chope" (reserve) their seats for the best view of the stage. The next queue that formed was for the drinks, as everyone who bought the tickets can collect 3 drinks.

The Fiesta's favourite Emcee, MC Kin started off the event with the favourite event of the night that everyone can have good fun - the Best Jersey competition. Well, this year, it evolved into a talent-time show as contestants are given one minute on stage to put up any performance they wish to. And it was a huge hoot going by the laughters in the hall. We had a she-male on stage who is "too sexy for you", a male stripper who exposed his boxers (not sure what has that got to do with the jersey), a few groups of dancers complete with props and selfies posers. Everyone had a jolly good time laughing at together with the performers on stage.

The first main event of the night was the Super League Cup finals between iDarts Dragon and KDT-魂. The iDarts Dragon team had their other iDarts teams cheering them on while KDT had their own supporters from Krugers Pub. After the teams' video profiles were played on screen, both teams had their Grand march-in, accompanied by their own pre-selected music. iDarts Dragon , from S2 Division, was led by team captain, Soh Wei Kio while the S3 division KDT-魂 was led by captain Bernard Choong. The game format was best of 3 medleys, handicapped. Although the teams were from division, but the performance they put up on stage was thrilling as every single medley went into the third decider leg. iDarts Dragon took the first medley, but KDT-魂 managed to stage a comeback and won the second medley on the 3rd leg. In the 3rd decider leg of the 3rd medley, both teams fought house by house, none was leading very far from the other. But a minor mistake by the KDT player was all it needed for iDarts team to narrow the gap and took the lead to finish the game and win the Super League Cup Trophy!

Super League Cup Champion - i.Darts Dragon

The next game of the night was the Grand Masters Cup finals between Dartslive Official Player, Harith Lim and contender, Zac Hong. Although Zac is the underdog in this event, he maintained his cool and composure to take the first leg with a string of hat-tricks and left Harith struggling to find his initial footing. But once Harith settled down on the stage, he was in full form, sweeping aside any resistance from Zac and took the next 3 consecutive legs to finish the game 3-1 in quick time to win the Grand Masters title for the second time.

After the games were done, the prize presentations and lucky draws proceeded. The stage antics of the best jersey nominees also entertained the crowds with humorous performances. The iDarts team finally won the award by showcasing all 4 variations of their jerseys with a choreographed dance movement. There was also a surprise wedding proposal on the stage (she accepted!) , lots of cool and expensive dart sets and dart accessories given away in the lucky draw and a surprise birthday cake and song for Dartslive Official Player, Cathy Leung who is a first time visitor to Singapore and the Fiesta. Cathy Leung was obviously an attractive hit at the Fiesta as she was constantly asked for pictures and autographs. She summed up the whole Season 7 Fiesta on stage when she said "This is the Fiesta with the most PASSIONATE darters that I have ever been to" and she would definitely want to come again soon. And everyone cheered back in agreement!

Super League Season VI Fiesta

It was going to be greatest night of the year to remember for all darters in Singapore!

Singapore darters returned to St. James PowerStation for a Super night of darts, drinking, dancing, partying, fun and games, prizes and pictures and many more!

The event was Dartslive Singapore's Super League Season 6 Fiesta and the purpose was to celebrate the end of the Super League Season 6. The highlights of the event were the Super League Cup Final and the Grandmasters Champion Final games. But to most of the players, they were also there to enjoy the party festivities that brought all the darters in Singapore under one roof. This season's "roof" was at TOXIC, occupying the venue formerly known as Powerhouse at St. James Powerstation. It was a location most conducive to partying with a high stage, big projection screen and a professional high-end professional lightings and sound systems.

Before the event started, many of the players had fun playing the darts-related "pasar-malam" fun games like Tikam-Tikam and Sharpest Reflex. The games require more luck than skill to win various prizes! Everyone had an equal chance to win prizes like flights, shafts and various other collectible darts accessories. There was also a huge commemorative picture booth for Polaroid snapshots or Facebook uploads. There were also door gifts for all attendees from various sponsors.

The event started off firmly with Fiesta's fun event - the Best Jersey competition! This time around, most of the teams seem to have selected and prepared their most talented player to model off their flamboyant jerseys! From cool dance steps, hand stands, Great Singapore Workout, Break-dancing to the ultimate front leg splits ! Everyone was awed by the stunning split performed by 花鸟风月 Darts Maxim's lady player and that probably gave the team a big edge and won the award for the team.

Full house crowd enjoying the Fiesta

Next up, was the Super League Cup finals game between Kronos Zeus and Kronos Hyperion. Although both teams were from the same darters' group called Kronos, both sides put up their best games and gave no opportunity or chances to the other team. The game format was best of 5 medley games and both teams played competitively, taking turns to win each game and dragging it on to the final tie breaker game. However, Kronos Zeus, headed by team captain Jason Tay, played consistently well and was able to perform under pressure with all eyes watching their game on stage. He threw the final checkout dart and was joyously carried on stage by his jubilant team mates!

Kronos Zeus player, Lincoln Lye, on the line

Once the team games were done, we moved on to second highlight of the night which was the Grandmasters Champion finals between Harith Lim and Tony Teo. Both were top-rated, popular players in the local darts scene. Both have vociferous supporters who cheered fervently for their favourite player. The game format was "The World" format which was the best of 5 legs. In the first leg of 701, Tony came back from behind but just narrowly missed his golden chance to do a bull checkout. Harith took the opportunity and made his checkout. That error seemed to have affected Tony as he could not put up a valiant fight against Harith who was in top form and checked out the next two legs quickly, making it a 3-0 win.

Finally, with the two most important games of the season completed, all the prizes and trophies were given away along with some lucky draw prizes and culminating in the the grand confetti shower for the Super League Cup champions. Until Season 7 comes around, here are some pictures to recall the good times and fun memories. Good Darts to all!

MSDO 2013 - A "Truly Asia" Darts celebration

The Malaysian Soft Tip Darts Open (MSDO) 2013 was billed as Malaysia's first and biggest soft darts tournament. Organised by iDarts Malaysia on 9-10 Oct in Kuala Lumpur, it boasted a total prize money of more than RM$100,000, the biggest tournament in terms of prize money. And judging by the feedback from the ecstatic Malaysian darters, they all went home happy but tired, excited with new friends and experiences but sad for parting after 2 fun days!

There were pyrotechnics, huge stage, big-name stars, an entrance decorative arch, live video viewing and a tournament hall with more than 36 Dartslive2 boards. No wonder that players from all around Asia came to participate in the 2 day event even though it was held on a working midweek of Wed-Thurs.

The tournament culminated in a Grand Fiesta party, with the Grandmasters final game being showcased on stage. It was between Royden Lam (HK) vs Harith Lim (SG), two of Dartslive top players who are already well known to the local players. In the end, Royden triumphed with a close 3-2 match against Harith Lim. Everyone enjoyed watching the exciting game and the experience and new friends made over the 2 days tournament was the best part of it all.

Super League Season V Fiesta

It was a full day celebration of darts!

A new format to celebrate darts - a whole day of league division finals followed by a whole night of partying! That pretty much sums up the Super League Season V Division Finals and Fiesta held at the Furama City Center Hotel on 2 June, 2013.

In the fifth instalment of the Dartslive Singapore's Super League Fiesta, the Division Finals were conducted on the same day as the Fiesta, making it easier for more players to attend the party after all their games were done. And during the Fiesta, there were the usual lucky draws, games, special door gifts for the attendees, special awards and prizes and of course the Super League Cup Finals.

In the Super League Cup Finals, it was the defending champion Ice Ice Baby taking on Kronos Hades. It was a field day for Ice Ice Baby, as they proved that calmness in the midst of the excitement rules the game. Ice players played consistently well on stage to retain the Cup for the third consecutive win with a score of 3-1. Good darts to both teams!

Super League players rejoicing with a traditional yum-seng

Super League Fiesta is so hot, its on FIRE!

DARTSLIVE Singapore's Super League Fiesta Season IV party was so hot that the stage was, literally, on FIRE!

Well, the flame was introduced by 2 talented Fire Breathers right at the start of the end-of-season Super League Fiesta, held on 18 Nov 2012, at Singapore's prime party central - St James Power Station. The Fire Breathers danced with twin batons set on fire and blew fire right out of their mouth! The fiery introduction caught everyone's attention and set the tone of the night - a hot and exciting night! It was, after all, the biggest party specially created for the darters of Singapore.

Fire Breathers setting the stage on fire!
This was the first time that the Super League Fiesta was held at the Powerhouse at St James Power Station and the raw, industrial decor combined with high tech AV equipment in the cavernous 5-storey high ceiling gave everyone an exciting and grand electric feeling of the night to come.

There were games booths to keep players entertained before the finals game got started, like the darts "tikam tikam" game where players had to hit random targets to reveal hidden prizes. Players also gathered their BFFs or BFP ("Best Favourite Player" like Paul Lim) for the all-important photo booth against a giant Super League poster. Once the drinks started flowing, everyone eagerly awaited the start of Super League Cup Finals game between Ice Ice Baby (from Ice Karaoke) and Matadors (Temple).

Walking on the stage first was the challenger, Matadors, from The Temple. This was followed by the imcumbent winner (by llocation) of the previous season, Ice Ice Baby, who danced "gangnam-style" on to the stage. After a brief introduction, the teams planned their line-up for their first set of games while their supporters cheered both teams.

Ice Ice Baby, helmed by Captain, Sky Neo, was under pressure to win the game to make it a 3-season win for Ice Karaoke, while it was first time on stage for Matadors, helmed by Captain James Quek. In the first doubles game, the experienced Ice team, comprising Jason Tan/Jason Lim quickly gain the upper hand, defeating the Matadors pair of Eddie Low/David Tan in a straight 2-0 game. In the second doubles game, the Matadors pair James Quek/Richard Gillespie slowly gain some traction but the Ice team, Roger Liu/Ong Hao Jie stave off the challenge with a strong showing of their own and Hao Jie was later awarded MVP of the night by Paul Lim himself! In the 3rd game, Matadors' player Zac Hong/Ken Lim tried to put up a fight but could not stop the pair of Osbert/Spencer, both shooting consistently as they sensed the trophy was almost in their grasp and made a quick wrap up of the game. The Super League Cup trophy, Season IV, goes to Ice Karaoke again for a 3-0 win! Congratulations to Ice Ice Baby!
