MSDO 2014 - Ultimate Darting Destination

The highly anticipated biggest Malaysian darts tournament of the year was held at the e-City Hotel ballroom at One City, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 15-16 Nov, 2014. It was a follow-up to last year's inaugural championship and it managed to top expectations of its title "Ultimate Darting Destination"!

MSDO was the biggest Soft Darts Tournament in Malaysia last year, so it had a tall expectation to meet this year. The hall venue was definitely better as it was newer, bigger and more beautiful than last year's, which gave everyone plenty of room to move around even though there were about twice as many people this year. There were two big LED screens which projected the tournament chart and a large beautiful stage built in front of the hall. There was also a big trophy showcase to highlight the biggest trophy of the tournament - the Inter State championship plaque. And finally, plenty of seats for everyone who needed to rest.

Organised by iDarts Malaysia and run by the team from Dartslive Singapore for the second year running, this tournament carried a total prize money of more than RM$130,000, bigger than last year's tournament. More than 500 players from all around Asia came to participate in the 2 day event including players from around the region like Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and Taiwan. There were pyrotechnics, plenty of props for photo taking, live video viewing, darts accessories, drinks, snacks and a tournament hall with more than 70 Dartslive2 boards. And judging by the feedback from the ecstatic home-ground Malaysian darters, they all went home very tired but fulfilled and happy, excited with new friends and experiences but sad for parting after 2 fun days!

One of the highlights from day 1 of the tournament, apart from the "early morning wake-up call" for those staying at the hotel,  include the Random Hookup game, which randomly paired a high rated player with a lower rated player. So there is an element of surprise as everyone was eager to meet their partner. The finals pitted Thai grandmaster, Thanawat who partnered a local girl, Sabrina Chan against Malaysian star player Atan and local darter, Bryan Bieh. It was an interesting game as both high rated players were playing equally well and had to rely on their lower rated partners to carry through the game in order to win. In the end, with constant positive encouragement from Thanawat, Sabrina managed to pull the score just low enough for Thanawat to do a high checkout and win the game!

The highlights of second day was the Grandmasters final game, played on stage. Even though it was already quite late on a Sunday night, there were still a lot of people who stayed behind to watch the match of the year. It was between Paul Lim (SG) vs Lourence Illagan (PH), two Dartslive Pro players who are already well known to the local players. Paul Lim defeated compatriot, Harith Lim in the semi-finals, while Lourence took out his compatriot, Christian Perez in his semi-final game. It was a close fight between the top 2 players as Paul Lim and Lourence wrestled to 2-2. But the decider game was a stunning game for everyone to watch as Lourence displayed incredible precision to close the cricket game in just 4 rounds, leaving Paul daze without a chance for a comeback. It was an amazing world-class standard game put up by both world class players and a most suitable finale for the tournament of the year!

Super League Season 7 Knockout Tournament

The Super League Season 7 Knock Out Tournament was organised specially for the Super League Season 7 players at the Furama City Centre Hotel on July 5-6. The purpose of the tournament was to provide more big-time, local competitive activities for Super League players and at the same time, maximise the use of a hall that was booked for the Super Leage Fiesta party. Unfortunately, the turnout was not fantastic and only hit slightly more than half the expected numbers. Blame it on the World Cup that was going on. However, the show must go on and the organisers valiantly committed to pay out the same prizes as promised despite the low turnout (hurrah!).

The first event for the SKO Tournament on Saturday was the Doubles event, broken into 3 flights. The event took up the whole of Saturday afternoon. For those players who failed to make it into the second round of the KnockOut Tournament, they had the opportunity to participate in other activities. There was the Sweet 16 event, the Extreme Bull challenge and the "Play with the Pros" games on the stage.

Yes, two special Dartslive Official Players were invited to grace the tournament with their very own side event. Paul Lim, Dartslive Pro Player and a regular at Singapore's tournaments flew in from Hong Kong to spar with players over some fun games. Cathy Leung, Dartslive's prettiest Official Player and a starlet from Hong Kong was a first-timer at Singapore's tournament/Fiesta and she lent some star qualities to the event. She obviously had a big impact on the local players as many of them clamoured to have the opportunity to play with her or get her autographs or take some selfie pictures with her. Even Paul Lim quipped later that he would be Cathy's manager should she be invited back for future events!

Here are the results for the first day Doubles main event:

A Flight Champion - Harith Lim and Joel Ng

B Flight champion - Anson Oh & Iggy

C Flight Champion - Edmund Tan and Vincent Lee

Super League 64 Champion - Seth Soh & Zhi Ying

In the A flight title, top Singaporean Dartslive Official player Harith Lim partnered Joel Ng to convincingly beat the team of Lincoln Lye/Eric Wong for the champion title. In the B Flight, the invited Malaysian Super League players of Anson Oh and Ignatius "Iggy" Yee took the title by beating the local pair from Team HKK of Eric Yeo and Chiam Yen Sing. C Flight champion went to the veteran finalists pair from Avengers - Edmund Tan and Vincent Lee, who beat the team from Le Circuit, Casper and Jeremy.

Once the Doubles event concluded, the next event for the day was the Super League 64, which was a knockout event for 64 doubles teams who were selected over the past few weeks at various locations around Singapore before the tournament. The finalists were pitted together in a grand final event at the tournament hall. The ultimate champion, Seth Soh/Zhi Ying managed to hold off the challenge from Harith Lim/Debra Chan along the way before defeating Gary Tay/Jalen Ng in the finals to win the crown. They won a fully sponsored trip to MSDO 2014 tournament in KL at the end of the year.

On Day Two, the event of the day was Blind Doubles where a high rated player will be matched with a low rated player so that the teams are all quite similar in ability. However, the start was delayed by the no-show of quite a number of players, with various lame (!) excuses ranging from overslept, too tired, hangover, forgot, etc etc. Never mind about them, the lesser the opponents, the higher the chances of winning!

Filipino players partnering local girls seemed to be the top favourites for this event as both the top teams each had a premier division player partnering lady players. Teejay Laureano and Candy Cai played against Mar Kenneth and Debra Chan in the finals. The trump card would seem to be the lady partners as both guys held off each other ! In the end, Teejay/Candy defeated Kenneth/Debra 2-1 in a close fight over 3 games.

Blind Doubles Champion - Candy Cai/ TeeJay Laureano

As the tournament came to its end, the hall was closed for the preparation of the Fiesta and everyone had a parting gift to make way for the transformation of the tournament hall into a party hall ! In the end, I would think almost everyone who came enjoyed themselves. Those who did not win, get to go on stage to play with some of the star players and get some pictures taken. Although no one won the Extreme Bull challenge, despite a raise in the reward to S$1000, it was interesting to see many people queueing up for the opportunity to take the challenge! Anyway, its no try, no win.

MSDO 2013 - A "Truly Asia" Darts celebration

The Malaysian Soft Tip Darts Open (MSDO) 2013 was billed as Malaysia's first and biggest soft darts tournament. Organised by iDarts Malaysia on 9-10 Oct in Kuala Lumpur, it boasted a total prize money of more than RM$100,000, the biggest tournament in terms of prize money. And judging by the feedback from the ecstatic Malaysian darters, they all went home happy but tired, excited with new friends and experiences but sad for parting after 2 fun days!

There were pyrotechnics, huge stage, big-name stars, an entrance decorative arch, live video viewing and a tournament hall with more than 36 Dartslive2 boards. No wonder that players from all around Asia came to participate in the 2 day event even though it was held on a working midweek of Wed-Thurs.

The tournament culminated in a Grand Fiesta party, with the Grandmasters final game being showcased on stage. It was between Royden Lam (HK) vs Harith Lim (SG), two of Dartslive top players who are already well known to the local players. In the end, Royden triumphed with a close 3-2 match against Harith Lim. Everyone enjoyed watching the exciting game and the experience and new friends made over the 2 days tournament was the best part of it all.

All fired up at Singapore SoftDarts Championship 2012!

After a long 2 year plus drought on the local darts scene, Dartslive Singapore put together the Singapore SoftDarts Championship 2012 tournament for the soft tip darters last week at the Grand Ballroom of Grand Park Hotel at City Hall. Dartslive players from overseas countries like Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Taiwan also flew in for a 2-day intensive darts shootout with the locals. Almost 500 players, supporters and spouses visited the Grand Ballroom during the tournament to partake in the 2 days of darts extravanganza. And thanks to the everyone involved, from board marshalls, bartenders, cashiers, and most importantly, the friendly (and some very funny) darters, all had a wonderful great time!

Paul Lim, the most famous Singaporean Darter and winner of many darts tournament around the world kicked off the opening games on the first day on 1st Sept with his famous words "Gaaaaame... On !!!". And away the games started off with the 01 Doubles event. The hall was packed with excited and enthusiastic yet nervous players, eager to win their very first Dartslive tournament medal in Singapore. There were quite a few tournament first-timers and some were visibly excited throwing with trembling hands too. But soon enough, after a few gulps of tension-calming beer, nerves were brought under control. Competition was tight as players were put into groups with other players of similar caliber. No one could say they were "(b)eaten alive" as everyone had a fighting chance.

The finalists soon emerge and their games took center stage. Everyone had an enjoyable time watching the finals games. The most funny and unusual finals was where Kane/Andrew took on the pair of Raymond/Eve for the C flight finals on stage. Kane and Andrew were trailing their opponent in the decider leg and Kane needed to do a high checkout of 146 as the opponent had 96pts left in the 01 game. After scoring the first bull and followed by a double-18, he needed another daunting triple 20 to win the game. He paced up and down the line nervously and had everyone on their feet cheering him on and breathlessly anticipating his last dart. He took a last careful aim and scored the checkout with a spectacular pose! And he literally jumped for joy and hugged his partner! Everyone else in the hall cheered him for that amazing shot.

Once the Doubles event got wrapped up towards evening time, the Singles and Grand Masters got underway. The Best-of-the-Best Grand Masters event was interesting as all the high rated players from various countries came together for a chance to take the top prize and the bragging rights that came with it. Skilled players included Thailand's Watanyu and Yong Thanawat, Singapore's Paul Lim, Harith Lim, River Ang and Hong Kong's Haze Leung and Ben Wong.

The semi finals of the grand masters event pitted Paul Lim vs River on one side and Harith Lim vs Ben Wong (HK). It was the Semi final game between Paul and River that drew the crowd's attention and support as River fired up all cylinders to shoot an amazing and one of his best-ever game on the stage, in front of a wowed crowd. He led Paul Lim through much of the game and right into a 2-2 score and played Cricket as the last choice game. In the decider game, he was leading Paul right from the start and look very close to winning, until he missed two precious darts on the last remaining house - 15. Those 2 darts costs him dearly as Paul came back with multiple vicious triples and overcame the lead and wrap up the game soon after. But River wowed everyone with his awesome performance on the stage that was worthy of everyone's respect. Good game, River!

The Trios, as the last event of the Dartslive Singapore's Softdarts Championship 2012 tournament, was a popular event as it reach its maximum team limit much earlier in the day and the organisers have to turn down a few more teams' request. It was a tough fight as there were no divisions and no handicap. Competition was keen and there were many cases of tied games forcing some extra games from the teams. However, everyone enjoyed themselves especially since there was a lucky draw and location players/team photographs.

Finally, in the Trios finals, we see the local trios of Eddie Low/Leow Wei Qiang/Kelvin Chan playing against the HK team of Paul Lim/Esanna Lam/Marvin Fung. It was a tough fight as both teams were equally strong and the game went into the 3rd leg tie breaker. Finally, all 3 members of the balanced team of Eddie/Leow/Kelvin shot continously good darts leaving Paul Lim struggling to catch up on the score. The checkout dart was confidently made by Eddie and the trios trophy goes to the local trios team!

At the end of it, most of the players were tired but at the same time thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had great fun meeting and playing with local and overseas darters. Some had tears of joy, some had tears of disappointment, but all of us had much fun to laugh and cheer about and collected many experiences and stories to tell other darters. We all went home that night with a new experience and a new zest for darting!
